Measuring Student Learning Institute
Using exams and laboratory reports to determine whether or not students are learning is familiar territory to most biologists; however, most biologists would admit that they are not experts at creating effective exams or meaningful assignments. The Measuring Student Learning Institute will help biologists to develop course goals and assessments that are grounded in research, nurture the skills to create, design, plan, and implement evaluations that provide both formative and summative feedback, and foster a network of colleagues for ongoing consultation and support. This institute kicks off a year-long Assessment Residency. For more information, visit the Assessment tab on the Biology Scholars website. Application deadline: February 15, 2012.

Jul 16 - Jul 18, 2012  Washington, DC
From Education Research to Publication Institute
Publishing one's work is critical to promotion and to future funding in biology education. The From Education Research to Publishing one's work is critical to promotion and to future funding in biology education. The From Education Research to Publication Institute will improve biologists' capabilities to draw conclusions from and communicate research in biology education research, give them the skills to analyze and interpret data and publish findings, and foster a community of practice available for support. This institute kicks off a year-long Transitions Residency. For more information, visit the Residency tab on the Biology Scholars website. Application deadline: February 1, 2012.

Jul 25 - Jul 28, 2012  Washington, DC
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) Institute
A major challenge for faculty interested in biology education reform and the scholarship of teaching and learning is determining whether certain teaching methods improve student learning. The SoTL Institute will develop biologists' understanding of evidence-based research in biology education learning, give them the skills to create, design, and implement an assessment experiment, and foster a community of practice available for support. This institute kicks off a year-long Research Residency. For more information, visit the Residency tab on the Biology Scholars website. Application deadline: March 1, 2012.

Nov 07 - Nov 10, 2012  San Jose, CA
Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students
The conference is designed to encourage underrepresented minority students to pursue advanced training in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, including mathematics, and provide faculty mentors and advisors with resources for facilitating students' success. More than 270 representatives from graduate programs at US colleges and universities, as well as scientists from government agencies, foundations, and professional scientific societies, will join ABRCMS in the exhibitors program to share information about graduate school and summer internship opportunities. For more information, visit the ABRCMS website.
