Although the signal transduction pathways emanating from G protein-coupled receptors in animal cells are well established, their counterparts in plant cells are still a mystery. In a Perspective, Ellis and Miles discuss new findings (Ullah et al., Wang et al.) revealing that the G-protein alpha subunit may be involved both in the hormone-activated signal transduction pathways regulating cell division and in the regulation of the opening and closing of the apertures (stomata) in leaf guard cells.
