Endocrine Disruptors

This is a lesson plan that I created to expand upon studentÂ’s basic understanding of the endocrine system and to make a real world application of the content to the students. The lesson focuses on endocrine disruptors, chemicals that can disrupt the endocrine system and may cause harmful effects. Students will learn about 3 types of endocrine disruptors in this lesson: bisphenol A (BPA), triclosan, and phthalates). Additionally, they will explore whether or not parabens are endocrine disruptors. They will analyze parabensÂ’ molecular structures and compare the structures to hormones belonging to the estrogen family. Using the Skin Deep database, a free web based resource, students will research what types of personal care products contain parabens, identify the harmful effect(s) linked to parabens, and list 1 way they can limit their exposure to parabens. This lesson has successfully been completed in an 80 minute class period.
