EB 2009 Refresher Course - Renal Physiology

Renal physiology is so complex that when taught to first year medical students it may leave the student unable to absorb the most fundamental concepts. The intent of this refresher course is to bring together a cadre of instructors with extensive knowledge and experience in teaching renal physiology. Not only will this benefit instructors assigned to teach renal physiology, but it can also benefit those interested in understanding the topic better. The most fundamental aspects of renal physiology will be covered in this refresher course, including: Renal Hemodynamics, Acid-Base Regulation and the Renin-Angiotensin System. There is also a discussion on Active Learning Strategies to Teach Renal-Cardiovascular Integration. By establishing a solid grounding in renal physiology and its history, one can only enhance the perspective of students as they examine specific processes relevant to nephrology at a molecular and systems level.
