PLANT BIOLOGY: Some Like It Hot

Access to the article is free, however registration and sign-in are required. Even a small increase in temperature inhibits photosynthesis, stunting a plant's growth. As greenhouse gases continue to accumulate in the atmosphere, contributing to the trend in global warming, engineering crop plants to withstand higher temperatures will be an important measure to counteract this phenomenon. In a Perspective, Sharkey describes a new study (Murakami et al.) that reports success in rendering a crop plant thermotolerant by decreasing the number of unsaturated lipids in the thylakoid membranes of its chloroplasts.
