BIOCHEMISTRY: De Novo Design of an Enzyme

Enzymes catalyze biological reactions with amazing efficiency, and years of biochemical research have been directed at understanding how they work. In their Perspective, Sterner and Schmid describe recent work (Dwyer et al.) that brings us closer to the ultimate goal of designing enzymes with tailored activities by using computer design to build catalytic activity onto an inert protein scaffold.
