VideoLab: Developmental Imaging's Sweet Spot

Glycans -- sugars that dot the exterior surfaces of cells -- can provide a biochemical window on what's going on inside, but imaging them in real time, and noninvasively, has been a challenge. Laughlin et al. devised a "chemical reporter" strategy that allows multicolor, time-resolved imaging of glycans in live, developing zebrafish embryos. This movie shows development of the olfactory organ in the fish, with a burst of glycan production tied to organ development. The scale bar is 10 micrometers in length.
