BIOENERGETICS: Respiration Without O2

The crystal structure of fumarate reductase, reported in this issue by Iverson, is the first structure of the important respiration chain enzymes that catalyze succinate-fumarate interconversion couples to the reduction and oxidation of quinone. In his Perspective, Hederstedt discusses the new structure and the evolutionary implications of its characteristics for the evolution of the respiratory chain.
